Jazz is a living language; the music is alive more than ever before. It needs to talk to the public and, with all its generosity, transmit its strengths and the diversity of its expressions.

Since its beginning in 2009, the Orchestre National de Jazz has played a role in conservatories, lending-libraries, schools and colleges, speaking to people of all ages; he's worked with choirs and big-bands, both amateur and professionnal, always seeking to stimulate curiosity and awaken sensibilities.
Daniel Yvinec propose regularly to meet the audience after a concert, seeing the opportunity as an essential moment for freely exchanging opinions. And meeting musicians from other countries, other cultures — and above all, working with them — is also an essential in the orchestra's activities.
To make each visit an Event, the ONJ proposes various cultural and teaching initiatives as well as other activities to increase public awareness.
The various modules presented here are examples of initiatives which the Orchestra can implement. Note that these meetings can take several forms, depending on participants' wishes and expectations, or on the nature of the partners present.

From master-class to conferences, via listeners' or improvisers' workshops, and from ad hoc appearances to residency-projetcs etc., the ONJ is broadening its mission so as to improve public knowledge — and love — of a new works of jazz.

  • LIVING MUSIC AT THE HEART OF THE ONJ

    ALL AUDIENCES

This programme takes the idea of public rehearsals a step further (although a standard rehearsal remains an option, of course).
Here the ONJ's proposal is for participants to merge with the heart of the orchestra with, as a guide, a member of the ONJ who officiates as a musician/tutor.
During rehearsal, with his "pupil" seated beside him, the "guide" provides an explanation of techniques used, relationships between written and improvised performance, and the ergonomics of instruments demonstrated (acoustic and electronic).

  • ACTIVE LISTENING WORKSHOP-MEETINGS

    SCHOOLS / ALL AUDIENCES

These workshop-modules – duration approximately two hours – take the form of conferences with the orchestra's various DIXCOVER(S) programmes as their subjects: Duke Ellington, Pink Floyd, Prince, Aphex Twin, Johann Sebastian Bach, Carla Bley or György Ligeti. Participating musicians situate the creation of legendary pieces or albums by these composers within their context in music-history, and explain how they themselves chose and elaborated their performance of these works. With musical examples, they give the public an opportunity to experience the repertoire's appropriation-process. Of necessity, these workshops take place in conjunction with a concert.

  • ENCOUNTERS WITH PIECES FROM THE REPERTOIRE

    AMATEUR OR PROFESSIONNAL MUSICIANS

With this module, the orchestra proposes that participants – pupils attending a conservatory or a music-school, adult amateurs, young professionals – work with one or more pieces from the ONJ repertoire, with the possibility of joining the orchestra in order to reproduce their efforts onstage. In this case, the orchestra provides these encounters with the necessary arrangement-work. This module can also be applied to amateur big-bands, choirs etc.

N.B. This module necessarily requires advance consideration to be given to the participants, to evaluate potential based on levels of musicianship and/or instruments played.
