ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE JAZZ
Dislocating an orchestra which has now reached maturity: is there any better way to reveal its secrets?
Taking cover-versions for its theme, the orchestra and its ten musicians have split into small-groups (duo, trio, quartet) to revisit the contents of a gigantic iPod with unlimited storage-space, and allow us to rediscover – at the fingertips of re-creative alchemists and osteopaths in sound – works by great artists from the worlds of jazz, pop, rock, classical and contemporary music: Johann Sebastian Bach, Aphex Twin, Prince, Carla Bley, Pink Floyd, Duke Ellington, Prince, György Ligeti… Even better, they boldly go where others fear to tread, experimenting free re-readings of some legendary albums.
The ONJ now proposes four Dixcover(s) with brand-new readings of music to delight gourmet ears.
GRAND BAZAR
Bach - Aphex Twin - Ligeti - Carla Bley
By
Eve Risser
piano, prepared piano, keyboards, flute
Antonin-Tri Hoang
alto saxophone, clarinets, organ
Within the intimacy of this highly personal duo, Eve Risser and Antonin-Tri Hoang propose a free navigation between the worlds of four composers: jazz keyboardist Carla Bley, electronics master Aphex Twin, contemporary iconoclast György Ligeti, and baroque genius Johann Sebastian Bach. Halfway between new readings and inspired compositions, this "Grand Bazar", with its direction punctuated by numerous mechanical and electric surprises, takes us on a journey through poetic ballads whose universes marry with astonishing grace, and sometimes humour.

SIGN 'O' THE TIMES Prince
By
Matthieu Metzger
baryton saxophone, farfisa, electronics
Sylvain Daniel
electric bass, synthesizers
Watch out: UFO!
Matthieu Metzger and Sylvain Daniel – genuine men-machines – deliver a particularly surprising new reading of Sign 'O' the Times, the sublimely kaleidoscopic album (released 1987) with which Prince put his seal on the apogee of the Eighties. The musicians chose to explore the dark side of the artist – complete with clammy texts and strange world-vision – using out-of-sync orchestration which mingles groove, electro and slam. This is a Sign ‘O’ the Times reinvented by a hypnotic duo somewhere between Kraftwerk and James Brown, Berlin and Minneapolis.

ANATOMY OF A MURDER Duke Ellington
By
Rémi Dumoulin
saxophones, clarinets
Sylvain Bardiau
trumpet, trombone
Matthieu Metzger
saxophones, electronics
Yoann Serra
drums, keyboard, flute
Three horns and the drummer from the ONJ tackle Anatomy of a Murder, the magnificent original soundtrack which Duke Ellington composed for the film of the same name by Otto Preminger, released in 1959. As passionate fans of Duke's music, Rémi Dumoulin, Matthieu Metzger, Sylvain Bardiau and Yoann Serra took up the absolute challenge of re-creating the different colours of this orchestral masterpiece – originally orchestrated as a score for big-band – with a reduced four-piece group. After a note-for-note re-transcription of the original recording which would make it their own, this acoustic quartet gives it new life in unveiling its incredible richness with the full sound of a flesh-and-blood big-band that brims with swing and daring.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Pink Floyd
By
Vincent Lafont
piano, keyboards, electronics
Joce Mienniel
flutes, guitar, kalimba, electronics
Pierre Perchaud
guitars
Vincent Lafont, Joce Mienniel and Pierre Perchaud propose a sonic immersion in The Dark Side of the Moon, the futurist/trippy album released by Pink Floyd in 1973.
Picking up the original album's narrative without a pause between titles, the trio invites you on a spellbinding voyage – sprinkled with improvisation and amazing sounds – through the maze of this timeless piece of music. A mixture of faithfulness and infinite freedom gives this transfigured version – the original is one of rock history's greatest hits – an unexpected perfume, an intimist climate in which the listener continually sails between the familiar and the unpredictable.
